Christmas festivities highlight the environment.

Nature, in particular the need to protect the environment, is the theme of UP Diliman’s Christmas festivities, as emphasized in the theme “Kapaskuhan, Kalikasan, Kinabukasan.”

Major activities are lined up, beginning with Pag-iilaw at 6 p.m. 2 Dec. to usher in the Christmas season on campus. The program features community singing with the UP Orchestra, and turning on of the festive lights on campus by UP President Emerlinda R. Roman and UPD Chancellor Sergio S. Cao. Hosted by College of Arts and Letters professor Dr. Jovy Peregrino, the program will be held at the Oblation Plaza of Quezon Hall.

Two competitions are designed to bring to fore the students’ talent and creativity. Karolfest 2009 seeks the best amateur student chorus among the academic units, using Christmas carols as performance pieces. The contest will be held 7 Dec., 3 p.m. at the UP Theater. Admission is free.

Pagandahan ng mga Belen 2009 is another inter-college student tilt, this time seeking the most creative belen or nativity scene using recycled materials.

Meanwhile, Pamaskong Eksibit 2009 is an inter-college tilt on academic excellence seeking the best showcase of researches, publications, inventions and creative works of a college’s faculty, REPS, staff, students and even alumni.

Paligsahan ng mga Parol 2009is a search for the best lantern made of recycled material. Lanterns in competition are to be carried by its creators at the Parada ng mga Parol or the Lantern Parade. Lanterns, to be qualified for the competition, must not exceed the 5 x 5 feet. The competition is open to all UPD constituents.

Capping the festivities is the Parada ng mga Parol around the Academic Oval at 4 p.m. 18 Dec. Going back to its traditional format, the parade will circle the Academic Oval using a counter-clockwise route starting at Quezon Hall. Assembly of participants will be at the University Avenue at 3 p.m. A fireworks show, courtesy of Beta Epsilon fraternity will cap the night, as UPD takes a break for the holidays and awaits the New Year.

The UP Diliman College of Home Economics (CHE) has been chosen to receive the 2009 PCIERD Kabalikat Award under the Academe Partner category.

The award recognizes partners of the Philippine Council for Industry and Energy Research and Development (PCIERD) who have shown interest and invaluable support to science and technology, particularly to its assistance programs for research and development projects critically needed by the local food industry.

An agency under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the 2009 PCIERD Kabalikat Awards were given on March 18 in celebration of the agency’s 27th anniversary.

The award was given to the research and development project of Professor Teresita P. Acevedo entitled Development of Standards for Selected Ethnic Food Products (2005-2007; 2008-2009).  A tripartite research and development cooperation among the government (PCIERD-DOST), the academic institution (UP Diliman) and industry association (Philippine Food Processors and Exporters Organization, Inc. or PHILFOODEX), the project aims to formulate quality and safety standards for Philippine ethnic food products to harmonize export and domestic requirements for the provision of better access to world markets.

The first phase of the project (May 2005 to August 2007) saw the completion of Philippine National Standards (PNS) for thermally processed fish products, mango and citrus beverage products, banana chips, dried tropical fruits (mango, papaya, pineapple and jackfruit), and fried corn snacks (chichacorn).  With the second phase of the ongoing project (June 2008 to May 2009), standards development for sugar cane wine (basi), tropical fruit wines, and processed pili nut products are already underway.

National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario is the Guest Speaker for the 98th Commencement Exercises, UP Diliman. Better known by his pen name, Rio Alma, he is a poet, critic, translator, editor, teacher and cultural manager.

He became the Executive Director of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts from 1998 to 2001. At present, he is the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters of the University of the Philippines.
Growing up in Bulacan among peasants, Almario sought his education in Manila and completed his degree in A.B. Political Science at UP. A prolific writer, he spearheaded the second successful modernist movement in Filipino poetry together with Rogelio G. Mangahas and Lamberto E. Antonio. His earliest pieces of literary criticism were collected in Ang Makata sa Panahon ng Makina (1972), now considered the first book of literary criticism in Filipino. Later, in the years of Martial Law, he set aside modernism and formalism and took interest in nationalism, politics and activist movement. As critic, his critical works deal with the issue of national language.

Aside from being a critic, Almario engaged in translating and editing. He has translated the best contemporary poets of the world. He has also translated for theater production the plays of Nick Joaquin, Bertolt Brecht, Euripedes and Maxim Gorki. Other important translations include the famous works of the Philippines’ national hero, José Rizal, namely Noli Me Tangere and El filibusterismo. It was deemed as the best translation by the Manila Critics Circle.

Almario has been a recipient of numerous awards such as several Palanca Awards, two grand prizes from the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Makata ng Taon of the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, the TOYM for literature, and the Southeast Asia Write Award of Bangkok.

In 1969 he was invited by the Ateneo de Manila University to teach in the Department of Philippine Studies even if he has not acquired a formal degree in language and literature. He only took his M.A. in Filipino in 1974 in the University of the Philippines. In 2003, he was appointed Dean of the College of Arts and Letters in the said university. In June 25 of the same year, he was proclaimed National Artist for Literature.

Defeats champion FEU with a 1-0 win.

Cheers erupted from the crowd at the Erenchun field inside the Ateneo campus last March 3 as the UP Varsity Football Team won the championship last Tuesday, grabbing the title from Far Eastern University.

The Maroons won Game 2 of the championship series with a 1-0 win.

Striker José Adonis Santos scored the crucial point in the 49th minute and turned the tide of the game in their favor. It was a fitting finishing touch to a hard-fought season and ended a six-year drought for the team, who last held the crown in 2002.

The 22-year-old Santos from the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP) made no bones about the real reason for their win.

“That’s my job to strike and create points…But our teamwork and all-out effort collectively gave us the win.”

“This is a great blessing because everybody contributed and our efforts paid off,” said coach Frank Muescam.

Santos also took home the award for Best Striker while teammates John Edward Rances, Allen Jose Serna and Jose Maria Mendezona won the titles of Most Valuable Player, Best Defender and Best Goalkeeper, respectively.

“Let us not stop at what we know we can do. The world is changing fast…we must not let the chance to experience and explore knowledge and skills beyond our own worlds pass us by.” This call to breaking out of one’s scholarly confines was at the heart of College of Music achiever Cristina María P. Cayabyab’s (podium) responsorial message during the Parangal sa Mag-aaral, held February 25 at the UP Bahay ng Alumni. The annual ceremony honored UPD’s University Scholars (those who have maintained a general weighted average of not lower than 1.25), its achievers in national and international competitions including sports and national examinations.
