Defeats champion FEU with a 1-0 win.

Cheers erupted from the crowd at the Erenchun field inside the Ateneo campus last March 3 as the UP Varsity Football Team won the championship last Tuesday, grabbing the title from Far Eastern University.

The Maroons won Game 2 of the championship series with a 1-0 win.

Striker José Adonis Santos scored the crucial point in the 49th minute and turned the tide of the game in their favor. It was a fitting finishing touch to a hard-fought season and ended a six-year drought for the team, who last held the crown in 2002.

The 22-year-old Santos from the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP) made no bones about the real reason for their win.

“That’s my job to strike and create points…But our teamwork and all-out effort collectively gave us the win.”

“This is a great blessing because everybody contributed and our efforts paid off,” said coach Frank Muescam.

Santos also took home the award for Best Striker while teammates John Edward Rances, Allen Jose Serna and Jose Maria Mendezona won the titles of Most Valuable Player, Best Defender and Best Goalkeeper, respectively.
