The UP Diliman College of Home Economics (CHE) has been chosen to receive the 2009 PCIERD Kabalikat Award under the Academe Partner category.

The award recognizes partners of the Philippine Council for Industry and Energy Research and Development (PCIERD) who have shown interest and invaluable support to science and technology, particularly to its assistance programs for research and development projects critically needed by the local food industry.

An agency under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the 2009 PCIERD Kabalikat Awards were given on March 18 in celebration of the agency’s 27th anniversary.

The award was given to the research and development project of Professor Teresita P. Acevedo entitled Development of Standards for Selected Ethnic Food Products (2005-2007; 2008-2009).  A tripartite research and development cooperation among the government (PCIERD-DOST), the academic institution (UP Diliman) and industry association (Philippine Food Processors and Exporters Organization, Inc. or PHILFOODEX), the project aims to formulate quality and safety standards for Philippine ethnic food products to harmonize export and domestic requirements for the provision of better access to world markets.

The first phase of the project (May 2005 to August 2007) saw the completion of Philippine National Standards (PNS) for thermally processed fish products, mango and citrus beverage products, banana chips, dried tropical fruits (mango, papaya, pineapple and jackfruit), and fried corn snacks (chichacorn).  With the second phase of the ongoing project (June 2008 to May 2009), standards development for sugar cane wine (basi), tropical fruit wines, and processed pili nut products are already underway.
