Christmas festivities highlight the environment.





Nature, in particular the need to protect the environment, is the theme of UP Diliman’s Christmas festivities, as emphasized in the theme “Kapaskuhan, Kalikasan, Kinabukasan.”

Major activities are lined up, beginning with Pag-iilaw at 6 p.m. 2 Dec. to usher in the Christmas season on campus. The program features community singing with the UP Orchestra, and turning on of the festive lights on campus by UP President Emerlinda R. Roman and UPD Chancellor Sergio S. Cao. Hosted by College of Arts and Letters professor Dr. Jovy Peregrino, the program will be held at the Oblation Plaza of Quezon Hall.

Two competitions are designed to bring to fore the students’ talent and creativity. Karolfest 2009 seeks the best amateur student chorus among the academic units, using Christmas carols as performance pieces. The contest will be held 7 Dec., 3 p.m. at the UP Theater. Admission is free.

Pagandahan ng mga Belen 2009 is another inter-college student tilt, this time seeking the most creative belen or nativity scene using recycled materials.

Meanwhile, Pamaskong Eksibit 2009 is an inter-college tilt on academic excellence seeking the best showcase of researches, publications, inventions and creative works of a college’s faculty, REPS, staff, students and even alumni.

Paligsahan ng mga Parol 2009is a search for the best lantern made of recycled material. Lanterns in competition are to be carried by its creators at the Parada ng mga Parol or the Lantern Parade. Lanterns, to be qualified for the competition, must not exceed the 5 x 5 feet. The competition is open to all UPD constituents.

Capping the festivities is the Parada ng mga Parol around the Academic Oval at 4 p.m. 18 Dec. Going back to its traditional format, the parade will circle the Academic Oval using a counter-clockwise route starting at Quezon Hall. Assembly of participants will be at the University Avenue at 3 p.m. A fireworks show, courtesy of Beta Epsilon fraternity will cap the night, as UPD takes a break for the holidays and awaits the New Year.
