At the heart of the month-long celebrations is the Sarsuwela Festival 2009.
The sarsuwela is derived from the Spanish term Zarzuela, a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes, the latter incorporating operatic and popular song, as well as dance. The name derives from a Royal hunting lodge, the Palacio de la Zarzuela near Madrid, where this type of entertainment was first presented to the court. The zarzuela was introduced to Manila audiences by Spanish playwright Dario de Cespedes in 1879 and was eventually transformed and given a local twist.
The festival is a multi-faceted project featuring a conference, exhibit, lecture-series, research, film showings, performances, educational opening parades and other special activities to promote understanding of the form. Through all these events, Sarsuwela Festival 2009 aspires to provide a comprehensive understanding and a deepen sense of appreciation of the sarsuwela form.
Five theater performances are slated, namely: Paglipas ng Dilim by the University of the East Drama Company (Feb. 4-6); Walang Sugat by the Barasoain Kalinangan Foundation, Inc. (Feb. 11-13); Sa Bunganga ng Pating by the Far Eastern University Art Theatre Clinic (Feb. 18-20); Ang Kiri by Dulaang UP (Feb. 25-27); and Padayon ang Istorya by the UP Visayas Alumni Theater Company to be staged at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater (Feb. 23-24). The first four productions will be staged at the University Theater.
Capping the celebrations is Linggo ng Parangal, to be held from February 26 to 29, where the University takes a break to honor the distinguished achievement and loyal service of its faculty, students and staff to its Alma Mater.
The UP Diliman Arts Month is produced by the Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (OICA) for the Office of the Chancellor.
