University officials, led by President Emerlinda R. Roman (center) formally launched Sarsuwela Festival 2009 at the University Theater on January 22. The festival forms the centerpiece of Diliman Month in February and is multi-faceted project featuring a conference, exhibit, lectures, research, film showings, a must-see opening parade and five theater performances to promote understanding of the form. Members of the media were given a rare glimpse into the fascinating theater genre by three of the groups through excerpts of sarsuwelas they will stage next month. These groups were the Barasoain Kalinangan Foundation Inc., the University of the East Drama Company and the Far Eastern University Art Theatre Clinique. In the photo with Roman are Dr. Alexander Cortez, Director of Dulaang UP; Dr. Cristina Pantoja-Hidalgo, Vice President for Public Affairs; Dr. Jovy M. Peregrino of the College of Arts and Letters (CAL); Prof. Rubén D. F. Defeo, Acting Director of the Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (OICA) and CAL dean Dr. Virgilio Almario.
